This summer, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks makes her acting debut in Sparkle, a remake of the 1976 film about a 1960s Motown girl group striving for the spotlight. Sparks has caught our eye for her fun and bubbly fashion choices on the red carpet, but it’s her 60s fashion in the film—think mod minidresses and over-the-top hair—that we’re really envying this season. Colorblocking is as fresh today as it was in the Motown era: by combining opaque tights, a shift dress, turtleneck and statement earrings in bold primary colors, you can easily emulate Sparks’ retro colorblock look from Sparkle. Look for pairings of poppy red and aubergine, cobalt blue and yolky yellow, and finish the look off with a vintage-inspired patent leather tote.
